Herman Cunningham and John Roy McCravey

Posted in Uncategorized

About a month ago, my Aunt Carolyn sent me some interesting photos.  I have previously posted a photo of my great-grandfather, Herman Cunningham, taken while he was serving in WWI.  He is posing with John Roy McCravey of Floydada, Texas in the photo.  I don’t know how the two knew each other, and I surmised they may have posed for this photo because they were from the same area of Texas.

In her e-mail, Aunt Carolyn said that the two had looked for each other for years after the war.  I am not sure when they reunited, but judging from my great-grandfather’s appearance and the appearance of the photo, I think it must be the late-1960’s to mid-1970’s.  Carolyn believes she has a newspaper clipping describing their reunion.  Again, John Roy McCravey is on the left in both photos, while Herman Cunningham stands on the right.

I am researching the McCravey family from FLOYD Co TX in the 1930 census.

    Is Floydada from that area?

    My McCravey’s came from GEORGIA.

And so our small world just keeps right on getting smaller: my first husband’s last name was McCravy (without an ‘e’ in it) and he was/is from Georgia. Not a common name so there’s bound to be a connection.

My father. Loyce Douglas McCravey was born in 1914 in Floydada TX. I’m looking for ancestry history and feel that John Roy might be a relative…

My paternal grandmother was Alma Mae McCravey, b. July 17, 1888 Alabama, d. Aug. 6, 1926 Amarillo, TX.

Her father was Ira Ferdinand McCravey (Sr.), b. 1861 in Alabama d. Feb 27, 1940. Indications are he was once postmaser of Cherokee County, AL. He married Fannie Logan and he had a brother named William. Alma had brothers and sisters named: Ira Ferdinand McCravey (Jr.), Samuel James Terry McCravey (b. Jul 14, 1899 Tuscaloosa AL d. Dec 1, 1947 Amarillo TX), Lula Belle McCravey Davis, Fannie Sue McCravey (b. Oct 20, 1892 d. Apr 22, 1963 Amarillo TX), and Catherine Evangeline McCravey Collins.

Anyone who can may have more info on Ira F. McCravey Sr. or Fannie Logan, or others listed would be most sincerely appreciated.

We have noted that there are two McCravey’s from the area listed as privates in the 4th Alabama (Russell’s) Cavalry, Leroy Wesley and William. Perhaps they are somehow related to Ira, but we have not found a link.

  4. We have recently gained more information about our branch of the McCravey family. Ira Ferdinand McCravey Sr. ‘s (1861-1940) father was William McCravey (1817-1865) from Bartow, GA. He was married to Fannie Reid (1823-1895) from North Carolina.

William McCravey’s father was Ezekiel McCravey (1785-1860) from Rowan, North Carolina and his mother was Phoebe Conner (1791-Unk).
