Richard L. Swier

Posted in Family Biographies/Histories

Our family was shocked and saddened to hear of the loss of my uncle, Richard Swier, on Sunday, March 27. He was 58 years old.

Rick was my father’s younger brother. He was born in Yakima, Washington on September 13, 1952. His death notice mentions three children: Richard L. Swier, Jr., Rhonda Swier, and April Martinez, who was his stepdaughter. He also had twelve grandchildren.

When I was very small, my father was in the Air Force and stationed in San Bernardino, California at the same time as Rick served in the Navy and was stationed at San Diego. He visited us a lot on the weekends. Unfortunately, I don’t remember him. My father was transferred to Germany in 1973, and I never saw Uncle Rick again after that.

Some pictures of Rick:

Clockwise from bottom, Thomas Swier (my father), David "Buck" Swier, Betty Campbell Swier holding Deborah Swier, Walter "Randy" Swier, and Richard "Rick" Swier

Rest in peace, Uncle Rick.

Thank you for all the effort you have put into recording your family history. I’m a David Swier, son of Ben (your great grandfather’s Walter’s brother. 11 0f the 13 children of Dirk Swier reached adulthood and yet now only your grandfather(David) has male grandchildren and great grandchildren with the Swier name. It’s special and ironic that the name continues because of your grandfather’s adoption.

    • Thank you so much for the comment. I had no idea that my grandfather’s line had the only male Swiers to pass on the name. Very interesting and, as you said, ironic. My grandfather has only three male grandsons, too. Most of my cousins on that side are girls.

I am looking for a Dave Swier who lived in Abingdon, Va in the 80’s. He was manager at Western Steer in Abingdon where I worked during high school. I worked with him for years and enjoyed every minute of it. I have stayed in touch with a few we worked with back then and we all wonder where he is and would love to hear from him sometime. I can be reached at saysold@comcast.net Donna Miller Bise
